Augsburg, Germany

Augsburg is in the southwest part of Bavaria, Germany. It is the third oldest and largest city in Bavaria with a population of over 264,000 citizens. The city was founded in 15 BC by Drusus and Tiberius, stepsons of the Emperor Augustus. Augsburg was affiliated with the Roman Empire for four hundred years and was an intersection of many important trade routes during the middle ages. Augsburg is famous for its Fugger Palaces, which are the restored renaissance homes of the extravagant Fugger banking family. Also, Augsburg is home to Eiskanal, which was the world’s first artificial whitewater course and was the venue for the 1972 Munich Olympic whitewater events. Many people go hiking around the nearby Bavarian Alps in the summer and participate in snow sports in the winter.
