Course: Encounters Afar: Portugal (Lisbon & the Azores)

Course Overview: This course explores the history of a world city whose history and future inspire hope and provoke contention. Throughout the course of the semester we will study first about the rise of the Portuguese through their struggle against the Muslim powers that held the Iberian Peninsula, followed by an examination of its role as a leader in 15-16th century European expansion and the development of a world trading empire, and its modern history with decolonization and immigration. The highlight of this course will be a one-week study-trip to Lisbon, with the possibility of an excursion to the Azores.
