Course Information:
This course will look at the impact the Galapagos Islands had on the development of evolutionary theory as proposed by Charles Darwin in his landmark 1859 book "On the Origin of Species." We will trace the history of evolutionary thought before Darwin, will continue through Darwin's "Voyage of the Beagle," and will continue through the importance of the flora and fauna on these isolated volcanic islands with respect to the formulation of Darwin's ideas on evolution, including natural selection. The highlight of this course will be a one-week study-trip to the Galapagos Islands at the end of the semester.
