City of Perth

Perth, the largest city and the capitol of Western Australia, is located only 5 kilometers from the University of Western Australia. Perth is actually the fourth most populous city in Australia. It was originally founded in 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the administrative center of the Swan River Colony. Perth became known world-wide as the city of light when all of its residents lit houselights and streetlights in honor of American astronaut John Glenn passing overhead in 1962 on the Friendship 7 while orbiting Earth. The City of Lights repeated this act in 1998 when Glenn passed overhead again. Perth offers many forms of entertainment, including King’s Park, Perth’s Concert Hall, the West Australian Ballet, and Perth Arena.

The University and Qualifications

The University has a very strong research program and over 80 research centers. The University is very highly ranked according to Melbourne Institute Index ranking of Australian Universities. In 2009, the Academic Ranking of World Universities placed the University as the joint best university in Australia in the fields of clinical medicine and pharmacy. They also ranked the University second in Australia and 44th in the world for Life and Agricultural Sciences. Nearly seventy undergraduate majors are offered through UWA’s five undergraduate programs. Each year, UWA welcomes nearly two thousand international students from over one hundred countries.

Housing and Meals
There are five different colleges that are either owned or affiliated with UWA and they can provide housing to over one thousand students. They are: University Hall, Trinity, and St. Catherine’s College, St. Thomas More College, and St. George’s College. University Hall is UWA’s own residential Hall and accommodates 750 residents. The University also owns unfurnished properties close to the Crawley Campus which are known altogether as the Crawley Village. These properties vary from stand alone houses to units. Students are encouraged to eat meals at the University Hall Dining Hall. Students can either go ahead and pay the meal plan, or pay $12 whenever they want to eat at the University’s dining hall.
