Program Description

Institution
Founded in 1948, the University of West Indies has grown into the largest and oldest university in the English-speaking Caribbean, with three main campuses in Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Over 40,000 students are enrolled across the various campuses, and the WUI has an international reputation for teaching, research, and for providing West Indian society with the tools for unlocking its potential for growth.
UWI’s Cave Hill campus overlooks Bridgetown, the island’s capital and principal commercial center. The scenic attractiveness and relatively small size of the university community creates an inviting, intimate and friendly atmosphere.

Barbados
The Caribbean island nation of Barbados was once a British colony and is now best known for its white-sand beaches, sparkling waters and refreshing sunshine, and friendly local culture. With an area of less than 200 square miles, the island is a haven for fishing and water sports. Local people speak English with a peppering of Bajan, and English Creole.

Program in Brief
Through its seven Faculties (similar to colleges inside American universities) the school offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Engineering, Humanities and Education, Law, Medical Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences, Science and Agriculture, and Social Sciences. A variety of course offerings are found within each of these faculties. All courses are taught in English.

Orientation
The UWI hosts an orientation program for incoming international students that may range between three days and one week. There is also a mandatory set of pre-departure orientations at PC for all students planning to participate in the program.

Housing and Meals
Students can apply for on-campus housing in one of two residence halls: Frank Worrell Hall and Sherlock Hall. PC students will take their meal plan money with them; UWI suggests a budget of $15-$22 per day for meals.
